We finally got our first glimpse of The Witcher 4, and Ciri is looking rather old, sad, and tired. The cinematic trailer, unveiled at The Game Awards 2024, showcases monster hunter Ciri stepping into the role of mentor after Geralt of Rivia, taking on a fearsome beast in classic witcher style.
The trailer features a harsh, morally gray world where choices carry weight, and witchers struggle to maintain a fragile balance of empathy, justice, and survival amid the chaos. While the story remains a mystery and the game is likely still years away, this first impression left fans divided. Some called it out for being blatantly woke, while others are cautiously optimistic.
CD Projekt Red recently confirmed The Witcher 4 has entered full production following the conclusion of their work on Cyberpunk 2077. As the sequel to 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt—hailed as one of the greatest RPGs of all time—expectations are sky-high. However, after Cyberpunk 2077’s impressive redemption, CDPR has proven it takes those expectations seriously.
The Witcher 4 isn’t the studio’s only project set in this beloved universe. A remake of the original Witcher game is underway, alongside a new spin-off title. Meanwhile, Sapkowski continues to expand the world through his writing, and Netflix’s The Witcher series is gearing up for two more seasons to conclude its story.
There’s no release date yet for The Witcher 4, but there’s hope it will land on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S before the end of this console generation. The trailer also teased fans with a brief voice-over by Doug Cockle, Geralt’s iconic voice actor, suggesting the grizzled witcher might not be ready to hang up his swords just yet.
