Snow White Bombs at Box Office as New Rachel Zegler Videos Go Viral, Making Things Worse for Disney
Well, folks, the mainstream media is finally waking up to what we’ve known for ages: Disney has gone too far. The backlash we predicted two years ago when they decided to push agendas over quality entertainment is now in full swing, and the numbers don’t lie. Snow White is officially bombing at the box office.
Despite a massive $270 million production budget (and another $100 million or so for marketing), the movie only brought in a dismal $43 million domestically during its opening weekend. Globally, it managed $87 million, but that’s still far cry from what’s needed to even break even. To put it in perspective, even Snow White and the Huntsman, which wasn’t exactly a critical darling, opened stronger with $56 million domestically. Compared to other Disney live-action remakes like The Lion King ($191 million), Beauty and the Beast ($174 million), and even The Little Mermaid ($95 million), Snow White’s performance is catastrophic. Experts are calling it potentially the worst-performing Disney live-action adaptation ever.
And it gets worse for Disney. New clips of Rachel Zegler, the star of Snow White, are circulating online, and let’s just say people aren’t holding back their opinions. It seems many viewers are reacting negatively to some of her past statements, and these viral videos are only amplifying the sentiment. As one viral post put it, “Welcome back to reality princess snow White was a complete flop”. Another highlighted a video where Zegler talks about the original cartoon being outdated.
While some have pointed out that Rachel Zegler’s performance and singing were bright spots, the villain, the overall script, the sad and bad directing, and the horrifying CGI dwarves have been widely criticized. Even the Hollywood Reporter acknowledges the “near disastrous numbers” considering the film’s mega budget.
Adding fuel to the fire, the movie received a mediocre “B” CinemaScore, a rarity for Disney live-action remakes, most of which typically earn an “A”. This suggests that even those who did see the film weren’t particularly impressed.
Now, some might point to Mufasa: The Lion King, which had a slow start but eventually became a hit, as a glimmer of hope. However, that situation seems like an anomaly, especially considering Snow White‘s poor reviews and audience reception. Even if it somehow reached $700 million globally, it would still likely lose Disney around $300 million due to its massive production and marketing costs. To break even, this film needs to rake in over a billion dollars, a feat that looks increasingly unlikely.
The internet is having a field day with this, and frankly, it brings us a bit of joy to see the consequences of prioritizing divisive narratives over good storytelling. The memes and satirical videos, like the one from Alberry Comedy imagining Snow White as a “woke Colombian woman who looks like a fish,” are going viral, further highlighting the widespread dissatisfaction.
Ultimately, this Snow White debacle should be a massive wake-up call for Disney. Perhaps they’ll learn that alienating a significant portion of their audience isn’t a winning strategy.
