Late-night television show host Stephen Colbert dismissed the problems Americans are facing as a result of surging gas prices during a Monday night airing of “The Late Show.”
Colbert relented that the skyrocketing gas prices “sting,” but said that “a clean conscience is worth a buck or two,” adding that he’ll pay up to $15 a gallon because he drives a Tesla.
The average price of an electric vehicle in the U.S. is $56,437, according to Kelley Blue Book.
Critics have slammed Colbert for his comments, calling them out of touch, considering 86% of Americans commute to work using a private vehicle, according to the Census Bureau.
The Biden administration garnered similar flak this week after Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg suggested electric vehicles would be a solution to Americans’ gas price woes.
