BRUTAL Wisconsin Loss: A Wake-Up Call for the GOP!
Well, we didn’t get the result we wanted in Wisconsin, and let’s be honest, it was a tough loss. Brad Shiml, the Republican Supreme Court justice, was defeated by over 10 points – it wasn’t even close. The race was called incredibly early, with a significant portion of the vote still out. While it’s disheartening, it’s crucial that we, and Republicans across the nation, see this as a major wake-up call, especially concerning these smaller, off-season elections where the GOP consistently underperforms.
Now, let’s be clear, despite this defeat, the fundamental political landscape in Wisconsin hasn’t drastically shifted. The state supreme court was already leaning liberal. The voter ID law, a positive step, has been in place since 2016 and is now enshrined in the state constitution. So, in terms of the legal framework, nothing truly changed.
However, this loss carries significant lessons, particularly as we look ahead to the crucial midterm elections. We saw a similar scenario in 2018 after the high of Trump’s victory, where the midterms resulted in the loss of the House majority, severely hindering progress. We cannot afford to repeat that. I’ve personally learned a lot from this experience, and I pledge to be far more involved and proactive in future elections, starting well before the final week. I’m committed to door-knocking, phone banking, and mobilizing people much earlier.
So, why did we lose so decisively? Several factors seem to have played a significant role:
- Republican Apathy in Special Elections: This is a recurring problem. Republicans simply don’t show up in the same numbers for these off-cycle races. I take some responsibility for not mobilizing efforts sooner, and the GOP as a whole needs to address this.
- The Abortion Issue: It’s undeniable that in purple states like Wisconsin, the issue of abortion is a massive hurdle for Republicans. Every single ad on television for this Supreme Court race, just like previous elections involving Eric Hovde and past Supreme Court races, was overwhelmingly focused on abortion. The narrative that Republicans want to ban abortion, even in cases of rape and incest, dominated the airwaves for months. The GOP needs to find a better way to message on this issue in battleground states. While I am pro-life, the current messaging strategy is clearly not working in these crucial swing states. This isn’t an issue in deeply red states, but in Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and Michigan, it’s a serious problem.
- The “Elon Effect”: While I support Elon and what he’s doing, I believe his prominent involvement in this election cycle may have inadvertently motivated Democrats due to “Elon derangement syndrome”. Unlike Soros, who operates more behind the scenes, Elon’s high-profile presence might have galvanized the opposition.
- Outside Money: The influence of out-of-state money pouring into Wisconsin, like the significant donation from Illinois’ JB Pritzker, is unacceptable and needs to be addressed at the federal level. This influx of cash helped drive turnout in liberal strongholds.
- The Power of Urban Centers: The election was ultimately decided by the overwhelming turnout in Madison and Milwaukee, two heavily liberal areas. The votes from these two cities alone were enough to overcome the rest of the state. While Shiml underperformed Trump in these areas, the overall margin was too large to overcome.
- Lack of Ground Game: The Republican ground game in Wisconsin was virtually non-existent. This needs to be a major area of improvement moving forward.
While the loss in Wisconsin stings, there is a silver lining: we have successfully enshrined voter ID laws in the state constitution. Hopefully, this defeat will serve as a much-needed wakeup call for Republican leadership and voters nationwide, including myself. We must learn from this and fight like hell in the upcoming midterm elections and any special elections that arise.
It’s also worth noting that there was some good news out of Florida, where a GOP senator won their special election, extending the House GOP majority. This offers a bit of a buffer, even if Wisconsin’s new liberal judge attempts to gerrymander the state and cost us House seats.
